The Kano State Government has sealed more than 300 illegal structures across the metropolis as part of a renewed campaign to enforce physical planning regulations and restore order to urban development.
Chairman of the Kano State Taskforce on Illegal Structures, Dr Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, disclosed this on Wednesday, saying the exercise targets buildings erected in violation of approved master plans and existing urban planning laws.
According to him, the enforcement operation covered major corridors, including Maiduguri Road, Western Bypass, Eastern Bypass, Ahmadu Bello Way and Gwarzo Road.
Among the affected properties are the Dan’agundi Shopping Plaza, block manufacturing yards, a car park, a Chinese construction firm’s site, structures built beneath high-tension electricity lines at Rimin Gata, and a two-storey building at Gadon Kaya that was re-sealed by the taskforce.
Dr Sani explained that the exercise specifically targets illegal developments located on road setbacks, public lands, waterways and power line corridors, describing such structures as violations of the state’s physical planning regulations.

He directed owners and developers of the sealed properties to report to the headquarters of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS) on Dr Bala Muhammad Way to regularise their documents.
According to the taskforce chairman, affected property owners are required to present their Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), land allocation papers and approved building plans before any consideration is given to reopening or the resumption of construction activities.
He warned that developers who fail to comply with the directive would face prosecution, stressing that the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against unapproved developments.
Dr Sani reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring that all physical developments in Kano strictly comply with due process and existing urban planning laws, adding that the enforcement exercise would continue across the state.
