The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Lagos State, Funso Doherty, has vowed to make education and healthcare accessible at no cost within his first 100 days in office, if given the mandate to govern the state in 2027.
The governorship candidate also pledged that every child in the state’s public schools will be provided with one “nutritious” meal every day, among other promises.
Doherty made the pledge on Thursday during a special town hall meeting hosted by The Platform, a thought leadership initiative of The Covenant Nation, Lagos.
When asked about his plans in his first 100 days in office, he said his administration would “make education entirely free, including books and exam fees.
“We will also provide one nutritious meal for every kid in public school. We will also provide a programme by which kids who are in public schools are transported free to school if they need it.”
Doherty noted the value his administration would place on children and healthcare.
He pledged to ensure that “education is not denied to any child. Because the children, given our demographics, are the hope of the future and will be the time bomb of the future.
“The other thing that you can expect from us is that there will be truly free healthcare and maternal and child healthcare.”
When asked about his plans to provide housing to the state’s residents, the NDC flagbearer disclosed that his administration would prefer what he termed a “quantum approach.”
He said that rather than providing housing facilities in small units, thousands of housing units would be provided in his first four years in office.
“Now, our plan for housing is not one that delivers 200 units or 300 units. We have a quantum approach to housing. Our commitment is to deliver about 150,000 units in our first, in our first term because a large part of the problem with housing is the fact that supply has not kept up with the demand,” he stated.
