The Convener of The Alternative Movement, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has canvassed support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Ogun East Senatorial District, Prince Dapo Abiodun, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Showunmi made the call on Thursday at an interactive session with members and supporters of the APC in Ijebu Igbo, where he urged voters in the senatorial district to ensure that the former Ogun State governor receives substantial votes.
He said Ogun East remained strategically important to the political and economic interests of the state, stressing that voters should not allow political considerations to undermine the senatorial election.
Showunmi solicited for massive voter turnout, saying Ogun State had a sufficiently large voting population to produce election figures comparable with some of the country’s most populous states.
“We cannot play tricks with the senatorial election of this senatorial district because of the proximity to the business community, to the President and to all the benefits that can accrue to them first, and most likely to Ogun,” he said.

He noted that the total number of registered voters in Ogun State was approaching three million, arguing that the state should translate its population into a significant electoral advantage.
Showunmi said, “I have come to Ijebu Igbo today to beg them, not only for victory for the President, but I want maximum available votes.
“There is no reason why the people of Ogun State will not bring numbers that can rival the people of Kano, Katsina or Kaduna.
He insisted that his appeal was not based merely on securing victory for the President, and Abiodun, but on ensuring that voters came out in large numbers and delivered what he described as “quality of number” at the polls.
On concerns raised over President Bola Tinubu’s health following his absence from the recent United Nations General Assembly, Showunmi dismissed the claims, saying the President was in good health.
He argued that the President’s absence from the UN gathering should not be interpreted as an inability to discharge his responsibilities, pointing out that the Vice President could represent him at international engagements when necessary.
Showunmi also cited ongoing investment initiatives in Nigeria, including investments in the gas sector and a proposed seaport in Ogun State, as reasons he believed the President’s attention could appropriately be focused on domestic economic development.
He urged Nigerians not to be unduly influenced by rumours concerning the President’s health, saying political opponents should not be allowed to turn every development into an opportunity for negative speculation.
