The Federal Polytechnic, Idah, has elected Dr. Abu Onoja as its new Deputy Rector, Administration, while setting 2027 as the year for its 26th Convocation Ceremony and Golden Jubilee celebration.
The decisions were among the major outcomes of the institution’s 26th/5th scheduled Academic Board meeting, held at the Polytechnic’s Multipurpose Hall.
Dr. Onoja emerged victorious after defeating Esv. Anthony Tinufa in a keenly contested election. The two candidates were presented by the Rector and Chairman of the Academic Board, Dr. Y. B. Usman, in line with the provisions of the Polytechnic Act.
His election is expected to be forwarded to the Governing Council for consideration and confirmation at its next meeting.
Addressing members of the Academic Board, the Rector also announced that the institution’s 26th Convocation Ceremony and Golden Jubilee celebration would be held in 2027.
According to him, the decision was taken to enable the Polytechnic to properly align activities marking its 50th anniversary with other major institutional programmes.

Dr. Usman further disclosed that the Polytechnic would host the 23rd edition of the Nigerian Polytechnics Games (NIPOGA) in 2027, ahead of the convocation and Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The Academic Board meeting also featured a valedictory session in honour of the outgoing Polytechnic Librarian, Mr. Bature Bitrus.

The Rector commended Mr. Bitrus for his years of dedicated service and contributions towards repositioning the Polytechnic Library. He noted that his tenure witnessed improvements in the library’s operations and access to learning resources for staff and students.
In separate goodwill messages, the Deputy Rector, Academics; Registrar; Bursar; Deans; Directors; and Heads of Departments described the outgoing Librarian as a humble, diligent and professional administrator who contributed significantly to the development of the institution.
They appreciated his service and wished him success in his future endeavours.
Responding, Mr. Bature Bitrus expressed gratitude to the Rector, Governing Council, Top Management Committee, staff and the entire Polytechnic community for the support he received throughout his tenure.
He pledged his continued loyalty to the institution and expressed optimism that the 2027 Convocation, NIPOGA and Golden Jubilee celebrations would be successful and memorable occasions for the Polytechnic.
