The Mokwa–New Bussa Road in Niger State was on Monday blocked by suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group, causing confusion among residents, motorists and commuters in the affected area.
The terrorists, numbering in their hundreds, rode on motorcycles, barricaded the road around Zurgurma in Mashegu Local Government Area of the state, disrupted vehicular movement, and forced travellers to seek alternative routes.
Sources also confirmed that the armed group stormed Zurgurma and other adjoining communities, creating fear among residents and compelling many motorists to abandon the road over concerns for their safety.
The incident caused confusion in the area as residents scrambled for safety, while economic and social activities were temporarily disrupted.
The Niger State Police Command spokesman, SP Wasiu Abiodun, while confirming the development, stated that a joint security team promptly responded to the threat posed by the terrorist group.
According to him, the swift intervention by security operatives forced the suspected terrorists to flee the area before causing further harm, adding that the attackers escaped into the adjoining Ibbi Forest following the deployment of security personnel.
He added, “Security agencies have continued to monitor the area and are taking necessary measures to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents and road users.”
Armed groups have continued to target communities and major transportation corridors despite ongoing security operations. The latest incident highlights the persistent security concerns in parts of Niger State.
