World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Professor Mohamed Janabi, has said Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of the index patient and her husband to Switzerland.
Janabi, in a statement posted on X @profJanabi on Monday, said the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical personnel successfully managed her through the acute phase of the illness.
He explained that the evacuation was undertaken because both the patient and her husband were Swiss citizens, adding that Switzerland would assume responsibility for the continued management of the patient and monitoring of her husband.

The WHO regional director said Nigeria would continue to closely monitor 52 contacts linked to the imported case, while the patient’s husband, who is the 53rd contact, would be followed up by Swiss authorities.
He congratulated the Federal Government, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners involved in the response, describing the successful management and evacuation as evidence of Africa’s capacity to handle public health emergencies.
“On behalf of WHO and all partners, I warmly congratulate the Government of Nigeria, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and all those involved in the response. This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to what Africa can accomplish when we work together,” he said.
Janabi, however, stressed that vigilance remained critical despite the evacuation of the patient and her husband, urging continued attention to contact tracing and other public health measures.
He described the development as a demonstration of African expertise, resilience and leadership in public health.
Nigeria confirmed an imported Ebola case involving a woman who had travelled from Uganda. Following the confirmation, health authorities activated response measures, including contact tracing, surveillance and clinical management, to prevent further transmission of the virus.
