•Demands urgent QA overhaul
PINECREST Healthcare has raised the alarm over rising laboratory errors in the country, calling for an urgent and comprehensive overhaul of Quality Assurance systems in medical laboratories.
Managing Director of Pinecrest Healthcare, Mr Chidoki Onye, made the call on Tuesday, at a press conference held via zoom ahead of the firm’s inaugural quality assurance summit.
The summit themed: ‘From bench to benchmark: Raising laboratory quality standards for patient care’ is being hosted in partnership with global diagnostics giant, Bio-Rad.
Onye warned that inaccurate diagnostic results pose grave risks to patient survival and effective healthcare delivery, noting that over 70 percent of clinical decisions from diagnosis and treatment selection to disease monitoring depend on laboratory data.
He stressed that quality management in laboratory medicine should go beyond producing technically acceptable figures.
Onye added that treating quality control as a mere checklist for regulatory compliance rather than an organisational culture compromises patient safety.

According to him, quality must be embedded through continuous measurement, process monitoring and systematic improvement at every stage of clinical testing.
“Compromised or unreliable results mislead clinicians, lead to wrong prescriptions, delay intervention and contribute to preventable deaths,” he said.
