Mercy Helpline Initiative (MHI) has sought a partnership with the Kano Central Correctional Centre, Kurmawa, to strengthen inmate rehabilitation and promote the successful reintegration of offenders into society.
The organisation made the move during a courtesy visit to the correctional facility, where discussions focused on expanding rehabilitation programmes, skills acquisition, and restorative justice initiatives in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The MHI delegation was led by its Executive Director, Samuel Solomon, alongside the Programme Manager, Ayo Adenaiye. They were received by the Officer-in-Charge of the Kano Central Correctional Centre, DCC II Ibrahim Isah Rambo.
During the meeting, the organisation outlined its vision of “Giving Relevance to Life,” stressing its commitment to inmate welfare, reformation, and the transformation of correctional facilities into centres of empowerment.
According to MHI, the proposed partnership aims to equip inmates with practical skills and support programmes that will enable them to reintegrate into society as responsible and productive citizens after serving their sentences.
Rambo commended the organisation for its commitment to humanitarian service and inmate welfare, describing collaboration with civil society groups as vital to the correctional service’s mandate of reforming, rehabilitating, and reintegrating offenders.
He said sustained partnerships with organisations such as MHI would help provide inmates with life-changing skills, reduce recidivism, and strengthen ongoing correctional reforms at the facility.
The correctional officer also reaffirmed the Kano Central Correctional Centre’s openness to partnerships that advance inmate rehabilitation and improve reintegration outcomes.
MHI, in turn, pledged to work closely with the Kano Central Correctional Centre and other custodial facilities to broaden rehabilitation programmes across the state.
The organisation also appealed to governments, development partners, and philanthropists to support inmate reform initiatives, maintaining that every individual deserves a second chance and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
