Scented Candles have really gained more recognition over the years; many use it to beautify and change the atmosphere. Even though scented candles make the home refreshing and very loving; its effect and how safe it is, to always burn candles, has been questioned.
Indoor air pollution is very concerning and should not be overlooked. Scented candles have been attributed to this; considering how often it is used for decorations and as air fresheners. When candles are lit, they emit chemicals that contaminate the interior environment. Research has revealed that it can cause air pollution. Two cancer chemicals have been detected (in its formulation) such as formaldehyde and benzene.
When a candle is burned, it releases hydrocarbons (made up of hydrogen and carbon) into the air. Before purchasing a candle, consider its fragrance, wax and wick. Scented candles release chemicals called “Volatile Organic Compounds” — which could have both short and long term negative health effects.
Less expensive candles are usually made from paraffin wax — if you inhale too much of this, you can end up having health issues. Scented candles with strong aroma have poor wax quality; it contains artificial scents and dyes — when burned releases chemicals. Petroleum is the main source of chemicals used in making synthetic perfumes. Toluene and benzidine dye used for colouring have been linked to urothelial cancer. Constant burning of unnatural candles can expose you to dangerous levels of pollution.
To be on a safer side, if you’re asthmatic or allergic, you should steer clear of scented candles to avoid any breathing issues. Stay away from candles made from artificial materials rather, embrace candles made from natural wax ( that contain less and harmless chemicals) such as palm wax, beeswax and coconut wax — they are more soothing. Allow enough ventilation when using it in order to get rid of chemical compounds and avoid indoor pollution.
