Bauchi Field Office (BFO) of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has pledged continuous support to Gombe State Government in its efforts to promote healthy living among women and children.
The assertion was made by the Chief of Field, UNICEF, Dr Nuzhat Rafique at the launching of the 2024 Maternal Newborn Child Health (MNCH) Week, in Gombe.
The event was held at the Mai Kaltungo palace and was attended by top government officials, healthcare partners, and community leaders.
She commended the state’s commitment to reducing maternal and child mortality rates through the various interventions supported by international partners working in the state.
Rafique stressed that the main focus of UNICEF is to ensure that women and children live healthy life which will in turn impact positively on the society.
The Chief of Field Office then reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising healthcare for vulnerable populations, particularly women and children.
During the launch, Gombe State Commissioner of Health, Dr Habu Dahiru, emphasised the administration’s recognition of healthcare as the foundation of a prosperous society.
He highlighted the government’s efforts to upgrade primary and secondary healthcare facilities, ensuring quality services are accessible to all.
The Commissioner explained that the MNCH Week will provide an integrated package of health interventions, including routine immunization, Vitamin A supplementation, antenatal care, newborn care, and child spacing services.
The Mai Kaltungo, Saleh Muhammad commended the State Government for prioritizing the welfare and wellbeing of the citizens through its various programmes that have improved living conditions in the state.
The Traditional Ruler particularly commended the health initiatives of the administration with a focus on women and children which he said is the key to a healthy society.
The Mai Kaltungo assured that the traditional institutions of the State will continue to play a part in the mobilisation of the population to access the various health interventions in the state.
Partners like WHO and UNICEF have pledged support, commending the state’s commitment to reducing maternal and child mortality rates.
The program targets women of reproductive age and children under five across the state’s eleven Local Government Areas.
