The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that true leadership requires courage, not crowd-pleasing.
Wike said leaders who base their decisions on public applause rather than conviction are failing the country.
He spoke while delivering a keynote address at the First Idoma Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Abuja on Thursday.
He said genuine leadership demands tough, unpopular choices in the national interest rather than pandering to prevailing moods or political gamblers.
“If you simply follow public mood, you will never make the correct decision,” Wike said.
“When I served as a Minister, people would pressure me to go this way or that way, and I said no. Because of that, they started attacking and hitting me… I didn’t bother. That is true leadership.”
The minister said governance requires systematic restructuring to ensure long-term viability, adding that institutional reforms must be properly implemented regardless of transient political dynamics or short-term criticism.
He dismissed doomsday projections over decisive executive actions, saying resolute governance remains essential to steering the country forward.
