Several shops were destroyed by fire at the Pumpum Nuri Water Site in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State, with traders losing property worth millions of naira.
The incident was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Yobe State Command.
The statement, signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SC Bala Garba, said several shops were destroyed in the incident.
The fire reportedly started around 11pm on Monday while residents were indoors.
According to the statement, the fire broke out at the Pumpum Nuri Water Site and razed several shops before it was eventually brought under control.
The cause of the fire was unknown as of the time of filing this report.
“The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is yet to be determined,” the statement said.
The NSCDC said the incident resulted in significant financial losses for traders and other business owners whose shops were affected.
It added that the losses were estimated to be running into millions of naira, while assessment of the damage was ongoing.
The corps said the fire was eventually brought under control and no lives were lost.
“No casualties were reported at the time of this report,” it stated.
