Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced a surge in Mpox cases, with 39 confirmed cases and zero deaths recorded across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking at a press conference, Director General of the NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris, emphasized the need for collective efforts to combat the outbreak.
“We are working tirelessly to contain the spread of Mpox, but we need the public’s support. We urge everyone to adhere to infection prevention and control measures, such as frequent handwashing, proper hygiene, and avoiding contact with infected individuals.”
Dr. Idris also addressed the ongoing cholera outbreak, which has claimed 176 lives across 36 states and FCT. “Cholera is a preventable disease, and we must take proactive measures to prevent its spread.
We are working with state governments and partners to enhance case management and prevention strategies. We must also address the root causes of cholera, including poor sanitation and hygiene.”
Regarding Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), Dr. Idris warned of its devastating impact. “AMR is a major global health challenge, and Nigeria is not immune.
We must adopt responsible use of antimicrobials, improve infection prevention and control, and enhance surveillance to combat this threat. The consequences of inaction will be catastrophic.”
The NCDC has developed a disease seasonal calendar to predict and prepare for potential outbreaks. Dr. Idris explained, “This calendar will enable us to take proactive measures to address potential risks, ensuring we stay ahead of disease outbreaks. We will continue to monitor and review the calendar to ensure its effectiveness.”
Dr. Idris also emphasized the importance of public awareness and education. “We must educate ourselves and our communities about the risks and prevention measures for these diseases. We cannot afford to be complacent. The NCDC will continue to provide updates and guidance to ensure the public is informed and empowered to take action.”
As Nigeria battles multiple disease outbreaks, the NCDC reassures the public of its commitment to protecting the nation’s health. Dr. Idris urged, “Let us work together to prevent the spread of diseases. We will continue to collaborate with state governments, partners, and the public to ensure a coordinated response to these outbreaks.”
