The United States has designated a Nigerian national and other individuals and entities across Europe, the Middle East and West Africa as alleged financial facilitators linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), in a move aimed at disrupting the group’s global funding network.
The designation, announced in a statement on Monday was issued by U.S. Department of State spokesperson Thomas Pigott. It targets three individuals and six entities accused of helping ISIS move and manage funds across international borders.
“Under the leadership of President Trump, the United States is dismantling ISIS’s ability to finance terrorism around the world. We are cutting off the financial lifelines from around the world that enable ISIS to fund attacks, support its regional affiliates, and threaten civilians, including religious minorities,” the statement said.
The U.S. said the latest action spans France, Syria, Türkiye and Nigeria, describing the identified network as one that facilitates the movement of money for ISIS operations across regions.
“Today’s designations target three individuals and six entities operating across Europe, the Middle East, and West Africa who have enabled ISIS to move money across borders – exposing a network that spans from France and Syria to Türkiye and Nigeria.
“Among those designated is a France-based facilitator who provided information concerning the use of explosives to ISIS supporters, a Syria-based operator who used cryptocurrency to transfer funds on behalf of ISIS associates in multiple countries, including the United States, and a Nigeria-based facilitator whose money exchange businesses served as conduits for ISIS financing,” the statement added.
The development comes months after United States President Donald Trump announced the designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians.
On Friday, October 31, 2025, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter.
“I am hereby making Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” — But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, are slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done!”
