The arrest of popular Lagos socialite, Emeka Okonkwo Daniel, also known as E-Money by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sparked a broader conversation.
He was arrested in his Lagos residence Monday night. He will be facing allegations of Naira abuse and the defacement of foreign currencies, including his alleged act of spraying dollar which is an offence under Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange Act.
A source within the EFCC, who craved for anonymity confided in Daily Sun that the commission has vowed to make more high-profile arrests in the coming days, particularly targeting those involved in the abuse of currencies.
According to the source, there is an ongoing project aimed at sanitizing society by cracking down on individuals who publicly spray or misuse money.
“This is no longer limited to the abuse of the Naira alone, but extends to the abuse of any currency on our soil.
“Mind you, the commission under the current leadership is embarking on a project to address the madness of currency abuse in parties, clubs and other social gatherings.
“I can tell you that in coming days, weeks or months, more high-profile arrests will be made to serve as deterrent that the commission is truly committed in sanitizing the country”, the source said. The EFCC source further emphasized that they are committed to pursuing this cause fiercely, with no intention of stopping. And like I said, more prominent individuals are expected to be arrested as part of this intensified effort”, the source added.
In recent months, EFCC has intensified crackdown on currency abuse, arresting several high-profile individuals.
On April 4, 2024, popular social media personality Bobrisky (Idris Okuneye) was arrested and later sentenced to six months in prison without the option of a fine after pleading guilty to spraying and mutilating Naira notes at public events.
Similarly, on March 17, 2025, Kelly Okungbowa( a.k.a. Ebo Stone )and suspended coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team, was arrested in Benin after a viral video showed him spraying money at a bar.
Another arrest occurred on May 25, 2024, when Zachariyya Muhammad was taken into custody in Gombe State after being captured on video spraying Naira notes at a social event.
