Nigerian writer and founder of the Leave No One Behind Rural Care Initiative, Charles Ogbu, has called on the government to declare a state of emergency on child abuse and violence against children following an attack on a young girl in Abia State.
Ogbu made the call in a Facebook post on Monday while reacting to a viral video that allegedly showed a woman assaulting a young girl and attempting to cut her throat with a knife.
According to him, the incident occurred at IBB Estate.
In the video, the girl, is seen crying, pleading for help and shielding her throat as the woman allegedly threatened her with a knife.
Condemning the incident, Ogbu described it as an attempted murder and urged authorities to ensure those responsible face the full weight of the law.
โI have said it again and again, our society needs to declare a state of emergency on child abuse and violence against children. And offenders deserve nothing but the harshest punishment possible. This is a blight on human civilization.
โHappened today at IBB Estate, Umuahia. I have since forwarded the video to the state government and secured assurances of their prompt action. This is attempted murder!โ he wrote.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the child.
