Bauchi State Government has declared Monday, August 17, 2026, a work-free day to enable residents to participate in the forthcoming Local Government Council elections.
The declaration was approved by the state governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, and applies to civil servants and other public servants across the state.
The work-free day also covers workers at the local, state and federal levels operating in Bauchi, as well as employees in the banking sector, to allow them to exercise their civic responsibilities during the election.

The decision followed the announcement by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) fixing August 17 for the conduct of elections into the Local Government Councils across the state.
According to a statement signed by Mukhtar M. Gidado, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Governor, the measure is aimed at giving eligible citizens the opportunity to exercise their right to vote without disruption from official duties.
The government, however, exempted workers engaged in essential services from the work-free arrangement.
It urged residents to come out peacefully and exercise their franchise in accordance with the law, while calling on eligible voters to conduct themselves responsibly before, during and after the elections.
The government also assured residents that relevant authorities would work to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
It urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies and electoral officials as they discharge their responsibilities.
The state government wished residents a peaceful and successful Local Government Council election.
