The Edo State Government has said its ongoing solar power projects were geared to boost economic activities in communities, and serve the underserved and unserved households in Edo.
The State Commissioner for Mining and Energy, Dr. Ojiefoh Enaholo disclosed this during the commissioning of 1 megawatt solar power grid in Ohovbe community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the State.
The project was commissioned by the Edo State Deputy Governor, Engr. Marvellous Omobayo, who solicited the residents’ support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September 21, governorship election.
The Commissioner disclosed that over 2000 houses would enjoy 24 hours of electricity from the Ohovbe solar grid, adding that the project was in line with Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commitment to stable electricity for residents.
He recalled that similar projects had been inaugurated at Eyean community, while others at the Military hospital in Benin City and the Irrua Specialist Hospital would be commissioned soon.
Ojeifo said: “Edo people have suffered epileptic power supply and exorbitant estimated billings.
“The electricity law was on the exclusive list at the time. But in 2022, governor Obaseki explored the law which empowered States to generate and use power for its facilities.
“That move gave birth to Ossiomo power plant in Edo. Former president Buhari then passed the law for States to generate power and sell. And President Bola Tinubu began the implementation,” he added.
