Manchester United has announced the appointment of Jason Wilcox, the former football director of Southampton, as the club’s new technical director.
The move comes after both clubs reached an agreement on a compensation fee to facilitate Wilcox’s transition.
A former Blackburn Rovers and England winger, aged 53, Wilcox joined Southampton last summer after spending 11 years at Manchester City, where he served as academy director before joining the south-coast side.
In his new role, Wilcox will oversee all technical aspects of Manchester United’s football department.
“Jason Wilcox has joined Manchester United as Technical Director with immediate effect, a statement from Manchester United’s website reads.
“He will work with all technical areas of the football department to achieve the highest standards of performance.
“Jason was previously Director of Football at Southampton and before that Academy Director at Manchester City. As a player, he won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers in 1995.”
The changes come after Sir Jim Ratcliffe, owner of INEOS, became a minority owner of the club earlier this year.
Ratcliffe’s INEOS Group took over football operations, and he is determined to appoint top talent to key positions within the club.
Wilcox, who spent over 10 years developing Manchester City’s academy, will be reunited with former Manchester City chief Omar Berrada, who has been appointed as CEO. Wilcox left Manchester City for Southampton last year.
Additionally, United are looking to hire Dan Ashworth, the sporting director of Newcastle United, and Omar Berrada, a former executive at Manchester City, as chief executive in the summer.
