The Labour Party, LP, has urged President Bola Tinubu to seek help over the increasing cost of living and hardships in the country before they become unmanageable.
The party said it is deeply concerned about how millions of Nigerians are battling with the crisis of food shortages since the turn of the year.
This is even as the party said it is calling on Tinubu to prevail on some of his aides from making inflammatory, incendiary, careless, and unreasonable comments, which are capable of offending the sensibility of average Nigerians.
This was made known in a statement issued on Monday by Obiora Ifoh, LP’s National Publicity Secretary.
The opposition party said Tinubu and his team should admit they’ve run out of ideas and ask for help, as no amount of propaganda could change the fact that more Nigerians are falling below the poverty line.
The party lamented that essential commodities such as rice, garri, flour, garri, and protein have witnessed exponential increases in prices since January.
According to the LP, there is an air of despondency across the nation, saying that the immediate fallout of the situation is increasing crime, particularly among the youths, and incidences of suicide are on the upswing.
Ifoh said that “it is either that the government is bereft of ideas on how to check this unfolding catastrophe or that it chose to continue to act as if it is still campaigning for office,” insisting it is no time for politics.
“You can’t run a governance based on a whim. The economic turmoil we are suffering today is a result of this poor sense of judgement. Sadly, amidst all of these, the All Progressives Congress administration has increased its spending on the lavish lifestyles of its elected officials, and corruption among government officials has never been worse,” the statement partly read.
