The Kwara State Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Abubakar Basambo, has resigned his membership of the party, citing alleged hypocrisy, dishonesty and double standards among some leaders.
Basambo announced his resignation in a letter made available to The PUNCH on Friday, and addressed to the state chairman of the party through the ward chairman of Magaji Are 1 and the Ilorin East Local Government Area chairman.
In the letter dated October 23, 2026 and titled ‘Letter of Resignation from ADC’, the party spokesman said his decision followed deep reflection on the direction of the party in the state ahead of the 2027 election.
Basambo accused some party leaders and members of the state executive committee of displaying what he described as hypocrisy, dishonesty and double standards.
“This decision was not taken lightly. After deep reflection, I can no longer cope with the direction the party is going in the state.
“There is so much hypocrisy, lies, and double standards amongst some party leaders and State Excos who parade themselves as loyal leaders,” he stated.
He also criticised the party’s governorship candidate, Zakari Mohammed, alleging that the candidate’s arrogance and the dishonesty of some members had made it difficult for him to remain in the party.
Basambo warned that the alleged conduct of some leaders could undermine the party’s growth if left unaddressed.
“If this situation does not change, it will surely bring the party down. This party cannot grow with hungry and hypocritical people parading themselves as leaders,” he wrote.
The former spokesman, however, said he had no regrets about leaving the party, describing his decision as a choice to end his political journey with the ADC.
Basambo expressed regret over his inability to continue working with his political leader, Abubakar Kannike, whom he said he had come to respect over the past year.
He described Kannike as a man of honour and sincerity, adding that his respect and appreciation for him would remain despite his departure from the party.
Basambo also wished the state chairman, the state secretary and the party’s woman leader well in their respective roles.
He thanked those who had supported him but added that he owed no apology to those who disliked him.
The former spokesman also addressed his meeting with the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bolakale Kawu, saying it was not intended to undermine the party.
“For the purpose of clarity and to exonerate myself from any anti-party allegation, my meeting with Mallam Bolakale Kawu was purely an act of brotherhood and that of a committed member trying to canvas for the party,” he stated.
He added that some party leaders had also been engaging in similar activities behind the scenes.
Basambo thanked the party for the opportunity to serve, while confirming that his resignation took immediate effect.
