Top 10 hospitals with affordable dialysis facilities in Nigeria

Kidney disease is becoming a growing health challenge in Nigeria, with many patients requiring dialysis to stay alive while awaiting kidney recovery or a kidney transplant. However, the high cost of treatment has made dialysis unaffordable for many families.

To improve access to care, the Federal Government introduced a subsidy that reduced the cost of dialysis in selected federal hospitals. The initiative is aimed at easing the financial burden on patients with kidney failure and expanding access to life-saving treatment across the country.

What is dialysis?

Dialysis is a medical treatment that performs some of the functions of healthy kidneys when they are no longer able to work properly. 

Healthy kidneys remove waste products, excess fluid and toxins from the blood while maintaining the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. When the kidneys fail, these harmful substances build up in the body. 

Dialysis helps to remove them, preventing life-threatening complications. 

The two main types are haemodialysis, which uses a machine to filter the blood, and peritoneal dialysis, which uses the lining of the abdomen to filter waste products.

Top 10 hospitals with affordable dialysis facilities in Nigeria

The following hospitals are among the federal health institutions where eligible patients can access subsidised dialysis under the Federal Government’s programme.

University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan

University College Hospital  is one of the hospitals selected by the Federal Government to provide subsidised dialysis services, giving eligible patients in Oyo State and neighbouring areas access to treatment at the approved subsidised rate.

Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos

LUTH is among the federal teaching hospitals participating in the subsidy programme, allowing eligible patients to receive dialysis at the government-approved subsidised cost.

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding states can access subsidised dialysis services at FMC Jabi, one of the hospitals included in the Federal Government’s intervention.

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi

ATBUTH is one of the designated hospitals providing dialysis under the Federal Government’s subsidy programme, improving access to treatment for patients in Bauchi State and the North-East.

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, Lagos

FMC Ebute-Metta is also included in the Federal Government’s list of hospitals offering subsidised dialysis to eligible patients.

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri

Patients in Imo State and neighbouring communities can receive subsidised dialysis at FMC Owerri under the Federal Government’s programme.

University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri

UMTH is among the federal tertiary hospitals selected to provide subsidised dialysis services, expanding access to kidney care in the North-East.

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta

FMC Abeokuta is one of the hospitals participating in the Federal Government’s initiative to provide dialysis at a subsidised cost.

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare

FMC Azare is included among the federal hospitals where eligible patients can access subsidised dialysis under the government’s kidney care initiative.

University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City

UBTH is another federal teaching hospital participating in the subsidy programme, making dialysis more affordable for eligible patients in Edo State and surrounding areas.
