The World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 identified cybersecurity skills shortages as a major challenge for organisations globally with sub-Saharan Africa among the regions facing significant workforce constraints.
This is important for Africa because the continent is experiencing rapid digital adoption and the more systems that come online, the more people are needed to protect them.
What is the cybersecurity skills gap?
The cybersecurity skills gap refers to the difference between the number of cybersecurity professionals organisations need and the number of people with the skills available to fill those roles.
Cybersecurity has become a highly specialised field. An organisation may have a security team but still lack professionals with expertise in areas such as cloud security or incident response.
Why is the problem becoming more urgent?
Africa’s digital transformation is expanding the number of systems that can be potentially targeted by cybercriminals.
Banks are moving more services online and fintech companies are processing millions of digital transactions.
Businesses are moving their data and applications to the cloud, while data centres are expanding to support growing demand.

This is becoming important as African businesses adopt cloud services to reduce infrastructure costs and scale their operations.
Artificial intelligence security
AI is creating new opportunities for organisations and new security risks.
Businesses need cybersecurity professionals who understand how AI systems can be attacked, manipulated or exploited.
They also need experts who can protect sensitive data used by AI systems and establish security controls around AI applications.
Similarly, cybercriminals are using AI to make phishing, social engineering and other attacks more convincing and scalable.
Africa needs professionals who understand both AI and cybersecurity.
Threat intelligence
Threat intelligence involves collecting and analysing information about cyber threats to understand who is attacking, how they operate and what organisations may be targeted.

A cyberattack on a telecommunications company could disrupt communications and an attack on a government database could expose citizens’ personal information.
The economic consequences can also be significant because businesses that repeatedly experience cyberattacks may lose customers.
Investors may also become more cautious about companies that cannot demonstrate strong security controls. Consumers may also become less willing to use digital services if they do not trust that their money and personal information are safe.
This implies that cybersecurity is connected to digital trust and without trust, digital adoption can slow.
How can Africa close the cybersecurity skills gap?
Closing the gap will require more than producing cybersecurity graduates. Education needs to become more practical
Universities and training institutions need to combine theory with practical experience.
Students should have opportunities to work with simulated cyberattacks, security operations centres, cloud environments, digital-forensics tools and incident-response exercises.
Companies need to train existing workers and organisations cannot rely entirely on hiring experienced cybersecurity professionals because the supply is limited.
