Amazon is preparing to take its rivalry with SpaceX into a new market after applying for permission to deploy more than 5,100 satellites that will connect directly to mobile phones, signaling one of the biggest bets yet on satellite-based cellular services.
The company has filed an application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeking approval to operate a constellation of 5,105 satellites that would provide direct connectivity to smartphones. Amazon plans to begin launching the satellites in 2028.
The filing marks a major expansion of Amazon’s space ambitions beyond broadband internet. It also reveals how the company intends to use radio spectrum acquired through its recent purchase of Globalstar’s satellite operations to deliver mobile connectivity alongside Project Kuiper, Amazon’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) broadband network.

The move intensifies competition with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which currently dominates both satellite broadband and the emerging direct-to-mobile communications market through its Starlink network. SpaceX has also announced plans to spend billions of dollars expanding its satellite-to-phone services using additional wireless spectrum.
Amazon’s latest filing shows that the battle for the next generation of wireless communications is moving beyond traditional telecom towers into space.
Unlike conventional mobile networks that rely on ground-based infrastructure, satellite-to-phone services promise to keep users connected in remote villages, deserts, oceans and disaster-hit areas where cellular coverage is unavailable.
Current satellite-to-mobile technology offers relatively low bandwidth and is mainly designed for emergency messaging, text communication and basic connectivity rather than video streaming or high-speed internet.
The direct-to-device satellite market is expected to become increasingly important as governments, telecom operators and technology companies seek universal mobile coverage without building thousands of expensive terrestrial base stations.
For Africa and countries like Nigeria, where large rural populations remain outside reliable mobile coverage despite expanding 4G and 5G networks, satellite-to-phone services could eventually complement terrestrial networks, particularly for emergency communications, maritime operations, aviation and remote communities.

Still, industry experts caution that satellite connectivity is unlikely to replace conventional mobile networks anytime soon because of its limited capacity. Instead, it is expected to serve as a complementary layer that fills coverage gaps where traditional infrastructure is economically difficult to deploy.
Amazon’s latest move therefore represents less of an immediate challenge to telecom operators than a long-term strategic investment in what could become the next frontier of global mobile connectivity, as the competition between the world’s biggest technology companies increasingly shifts from the ground to space.
