Cross River Monarch seeks constitutional role for traditional rulers

From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar

The Paramount Ruler of Ikom Local Government Area in Cross River State, HRH Minen Takon Atangba Nkpa, has called for a constitutional role for traditional rulers in the country.

The monarch said this will help bring about more inclusiveness in governance, as the traditional institution is very inclusive.

HRM Atangba Nkpa disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent and tasked the 10th national assembly to look into this issue as it will also help reduce the present imbalance in the system.

“If you look at the Nigerian constitution, it has not made it clear the guidelines for traditional rulers.

“When you talk about inclusiveness, traditional rulers are inclusive as far as governance is concerned; they ought to be given the rightful place where they will belong.

“The 10th National Assembly should make a law that clarifies the role and duties of traditional rulers so that there will be no imbalance in the system,” the monarch said.

On the rise in insecurity in the country, particularly at the community level, the monarch attributed it to the high level of unemployment in the country.

He said millions of young graduates are out there stranded and when they are properly engaged, these social vices will be substantially mitigated.

‘How many millions of graduates are stranded in the country government should do something in that direction.

“People should be engaged, because once they are, all these things will come to an end.

“When you talk about armed robbers, kidnapping and other societal ills. it’s because all these educated youths are not engaged, they should be given something to do. These people are the future of this country”, he said.
