The Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Barau Jibrin, has stressed the importance of the media in the quest for a better country for all Nigerians, saying journalists and public office holders are partners in progress with journalists.
He stated this on Friday at the National Assembly when executives of the Senate Press Corps paid him a courtesy call.
The journalists said the purpose of their visit was to commend him for being the sponsor of highest number of private member bills in the 10th Senate so far.
Led by the outgoing chairman of the corps, James Itodo, the journalists added that it was in recognition of Sen. Barau’s record and positive disposition towards journalists generally, that they made him the grand patron of the corps.
Itodo noted that one the bills sponsored by Barau, the North West Development Commission Bill which is now an Act of parliament after presidential assent, is already serving as a development – driven intervention agency in the zone.
In his response, Barau commended members of the Senate Press Corps for the recognition given him on his legislative activities .
He said the recognition will serve as motivation for him to do more for his constituents in Kano State and Nigerians generally.
“It’s your contribution to making sure that the legislature remains vibrant. Once you identify those who are doing well and you honour them through awards of this nature, that will create some kind of competition and will propel others to do more so that they can be recognized at some other time in the future.
“We are no doubt, partners in progress for the good of Nigerians and Nigeria,” he said .
