Former lawmaker, representing Ibadan Northwest/Southwest) Federal Constituency, Honourable Saheed Akinade-Fijabi, on Friday donated medical equipment to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, with the gesture aimed at improving the quality of healthcare delivery of the hospital.
Items donated include, a brand new Portable Phlegm Suction Unit, electric kettle and an incubator.
He also donated drugs to Kilanko Fijabi Primary Healthcare centre, Oritamerin also in Ibadan.
Fijabi, a former Chairman, House Committee on Telecommunications, said the gesture was to mark his birthday and impact lives positively.
Fijabi said: “What we are doing here today is just to give back to the community, I’ve been doing that and I will continue to do it, not necessarily people should know what I’ve been doing.
“I believe in giving back. This is not politics, though I’m a politician but this is giving back to the people. .
“We all believe the government cannot do it alone and that is why I’m here today with my people to donate these items.
“UCH is the best, the biggest hospital in Nigeria. Whatever we are giving might be so small but I know definitely they will impact some lives positively and we hope others can emulate this gesture and give back to the community so that Nigeria can be great.”
In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Professor Jesse Otegbayo lauded the former lawmaker for his gesture just as he commended his leadership qualities.
He said equipment donated will go a long way in assisting the hospital and called on other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the good gestures of Honourable Fijabi.
He said “Today is one of the days that we are so happy as a University Hospital community, because like I said earlier on, we have the human capital and the capacity to do a lot in the health space.
“However, many of our activities are hampered by lack of equipment and resources to do our job. And that is why we so much appreciate Honorable Fijabi, who is donating a brand new Portable Phlegm Suction Unit, Electric Kettle and an incubator for our children. And this will go a long way in assisting our nurses and our doctors to take appropriate and good care of the children that will make use of it, especially premature babies, for this.
“And we want to show our appreciation extensively to Honourable Fijabi for him to have thought of this on this occasion of his birthday. If everybody will be like him, we have in excess everything that we need.
“So we are using this opportunity to reach out to well meaning individuals to tow the kind of line that he is towing. And we can only pray as an institution that God will continue to bless him and reward him for this act of kindness that he is doing for the less privileged in the society.”
Also, the Deputy Director of Nursing at UCH, Bello Oyeronke promised that they will make use of the equipment donated so as to ensure the donor to do more.
She said the equipment will help to promote child, neonatal health, and automatically reduce neonatal death.
She described the donor as a passionate politician who cares about wellbeing of children just as she urged him to keep his good work and making impact although.
“We’re going to be using this for our babies. The incubator is going to be used for premature babies and other babies that are not weighing up to the expected weights.
And this is very german in their management,” Bello said.
