The Yoruba community in Borno State has declared its support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027, citing his administration’s economic reforms and improved fuel availability as reasons for backing his re-election.
The president of the community, Saka Ganiyu Abiodun, disclosed this to Tribune Online in an exclusive interview in Maiduguri on Saturday.
He noted that the community’s support was based on the administration’s policies, not ethnic affiliation.
“We are supporting Tinubu not because we are Yorubas, but because he has done well, and we want Nigerians to understand how the system works,” he said.
Abiodun said fuel availability at filling stations had improved, adding that Nigerians no longer had to plead with station operators to buy petrol.
He also said the administration had changed the pattern of political patronage, arguing that political supporters and support groups could no longer depend on free handouts but had to work to earn money.
“Now everybody knows that for you to get money, you have to work hard,” he said, adding that the system had been restored.
On the 2031 political succession, Abiodun said the community could support Vice-President Kashim Shettima to continue the Renewed Hope Agenda after Tinubu’s tenure.
He said the community had confidence in what he described as the administration’s transparent policies.
Abiodun also expressed optimism that local government councils would perform better following the restoration of their autonomy, saying greater financial independence could improve governance and service delivery at the grassroots.
He said the community’s position extended beyond Borno State, noting that he was a member of the national executive committee of the Yoruba community organisation.
The Yoruba leader further disclosed that he had written a book documenting what he described as 50 achievements of Tinubu, which he said would be launched in Abuja on 27 October.
