The South East Council of Traditional Rulers, SECTR, has lamented that the timetable for the 2027 general elections, especially the January 16 date for the Presidential and National Assembly polls, is unfavourable to the Igbos.
The traditional rulers made the lamentation after their quarterly delegate meeting, and urged the Igbos who would be travelling for festivities at that election period to ensure that they return to their registration areas in the cities to cast their votes en masse.
In a communique made available to journalists on Tuesday, the South East Council of Traditional Rulers encouraged all community leaders in the South East to suspend all festivals from January 10, 2027 till the end of the 2027 election.
The decision of the South East monarchs was signed by Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.
The Council, which approved the rotation of its leadership to Eze Linus Nto Mbah of Abia State, also supported the Southern Governors Forum in approving the rotation of the southern traditional rulers council among the three zones of the south.
On Nnamdi Kanu’s fate, the South East monarchs expressed concern that their son was not released, despite several appeals they had made to the federal government.
” The council expressed concern that after several appeals for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to the federal government, nothing has been done.
” The council therefore requests his unconditional release “, the communique demanded.
The monarchs, however, thanked the South East Governors for their continued support to the traditional institution in the region.
