The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery has assured Nigerians in the United Kingdom of safety amid the riots plaguing the nation.
Daily Sun reported that a travel advisory was issued to Nigerians residing in the UK following an attack on a building sheltering asylum seekers.
The attack, according to reports from foreign media, was triggered by the murder of three girls after a knife attack.
In a statement released by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) on Wednesday, Montgomery revealed that 12 towns in Britain were affected by the riots.
He informed NiDCOM CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa that British authorities are handling the crisis and doing everything possible to ensure that calm and normalcy are restored.
According to Montgomery, over 400 persons have been apprehended in connection with the riots while 60 special courts, comprising the UK police and legal operatives, have been set up to deal with the situation.
He also shared that the UK houses individuals of varying nationalities and races, noting that it would remain a liberal destination for all who wish to live, school, and work there.
Responding, Dabiri-Erewa said there have been no reports of harmed Nigerians while expressing gratitude to the UK for their cooperation.
She further advised Nigerians in the UK to remember the travel advisory, adding that others in the diaspora should stay safe.
