Wike pledges to sustain reforms, development in FCT

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has promised Abuja residents that his reforms will continue in 2024.

In a New Year message on Wednesday, the minister highlighted projects completed in 2024, emphasising that major infrastructural development is essential for economic growth and better living standards.

Despite his efforts, Wike has faced criticism, particularly for demolishing some communities and reallocating lands within the FCT.

He stated, “Dear Residents of the FCT, Happy New Year!” As we enter 2025 with renewed hope and optimism, I extend my warmest wishes to you all. And pray that this new year brings peace, progress, and prosperity to every household within the FCT. I also wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to you for cooperating with the administration in implementing its policies and programs. Your support and understanding have driven our vision for a better FCT.

“I also commend your commitment to peaceful coexistence and care for each other throughout the past year. While challenging for many, 2024 was admittedly remarkable for the FCT, as we recorded significant achievements that have set the foundation for sustained development. These accomplishments demonstrate our collective effort and commitment to building a prosperous, unified, progressive FCT.

“Among our key achievements over the past 12 months are: Massive infrastructural development, including the construction of new urban and rural roads, has dramatically improved connectivity and accessibility for residents, and rural road development has significantly enhanced economic activities in our rural communities, creating opportunities and improving livelihoods.”

He added that his office also focused on education by renovating several schools, creating a better learning environment for students, and equipping the next generation with quality education.

“Our efforts to enhance security which included the provision of over 100 vehicles to the various security agencies and implementation of bolder and innovative strategies have yielded positive results. Residents can now sleep peacefully at night, confident of the safety of their neighbourhoods.

“The creation of the Mandate Secretariat for Youth Development and other administrative changes implemented during the year have improved efficiency, accountability, and service delivery, strengthened governance, and made it more responsive to residents’ needs.

“By fostering an enabling environment for foreign and local investments, the FCT witnessed visible economic growth. This has been particularly impactful in rural areas, where infrastructural improvements have sparked economic activities and development.

He also revealed that in 2025, his office is determined to build on the successes achieved in 2024.

“Our focus this year will remain on: Massive infrastructural development, as a key driver of economic growth and improved quality of life will continue. Enhancing healthcare, education, and agricultural sectors, ensuring that every resident can access essential services. Tackling public transportation challenges through private sector participation will commence in earnest, easing transportation issues and ensuring smooth mobility for residents.

“Expanding programs for youth employment and positive engagement to harness the energy and creativity of our young people for the development of the FCT. Meeting our tourism potential. Building upon our achievements in the security sector. Fellow residents, we must also recognize that sustainable development requires the active participation of all residents. I urge you to meet your civic obligations by paying taxes, dues, and levies as applicable, as these are essential for generating the revenue needed to fund developmental projects.

“Let us remain committed to ensuring that the FCT continues to stand as the proper Centre of Unity, upholding the dreams of our founding fathers. This administration remains steadfast in its determination to transform the FCT into one of the best capital territories in the world. We can achieve the collective dream of a thriving, and prosperous FCT by supporting His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and working together in unity and cooperation.

“Together, let us embrace 2025 with hope and determination and may this year bring us closer to realizing our collective vision for a Federal Capital Territory that reflects the highest ideals of progress and unity. Happy New Year once again, and may God bless the FCT and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
