The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has unveiled ambitious plans for the city, aiming to drive significant improvements across various sectors.
Reflecting on the achievements of 2024 in a New Year message on Wednesday, Wike expressed optimism for the year ahead, calling on residents to join efforts in transforming Abuja into a world-class capital.
In his comprehensive address, Wike outlined key initiatives focusing on infrastructure development, healthcare, education, agriculture, public transportation reforms, youth empowerment, and tourism.
Wike emphasised the importance of sustaining investments in road networks and other critical infrastructure projects. He stated that robust infrastructure is essential for stimulating economic growth and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents. “Our commitment to improving our road networks and essential infrastructure will continue to be a priority,” he said.
The minister highlighted plans to improve access to healthcare, education, and agricultural services for all FCT residents, noting that these sectors are vital for fostering a healthy and educated populace capable of contributing to the region’s development. “We must ensure that every resident has access to quality healthcare and education,” Wike remarked.
Addressing transportation challenges in the capital, Wike announced plans for public transportation reforms involving private sector participation. This initiative, he said, aims to create a more efficient and reliable transportation system, making it easier for residents to navigate the city. “We are committed to transforming public transport in the FCT to meet the needs of our growing population,” he added.
Recognising the potential of young people in shaping the future of the FCT, Wike pledged to expand youth empowerment programmes. These initiatives will focus on skills development, entrepreneurship, and job creation, providing young residents with opportunities to thrive. “Investing in our youth is investing in our future,” he asserted.
Wike also discussed plans to unlock the tourism potential of the FCT while building on recent security achievements. By promoting tourism, he aims to boost local economies and create jobs. “The FCT has so much to offer in terms of culture and heritage; we must capitalise on this potential,” he said.
In his address, Wike urged residents to fulfil their civic responsibilities by paying taxes and dues, which are crucial for funding development projects. “Sustainable development requires the active participation of all residents,” he noted, emphasising that collective effort is essential for progress.
Wike also highlighted several key accomplishments from 2024 that he believes have laid a strong foundation for future development in the FCT.
He listed infrastructure development, noting that the construction of both urban and rural roads has significantly improved connectivity, fostering economic activities in previously underserved areas. This initiative has been pivotal in enhancing access to markets and services for residents.
On educational improvements, Wike said the rehabilitation of local schools has created more conducive learning environments for children. He noted that these improvements are essential for fostering educational excellence and empowering the youth.
In security, Wike noted that over 100 vehicles were provided to security agencies, resulting in safer neighbourhoods across the FCT. He underscored that security is a top priority for his administration.
On governance efficiency, the minister said the establishment of the Mandate Secretariat for Youth Development has improved administrative responsiveness, ensuring that the needs of young people are adequately addressed.
Speaking on economic growth, he said concerted efforts to attract both local and foreign investments have spurred visible economic growth, particularly in rural areas. Wike highlighted that this focus on investment is crucial for sustainable development.
He assured residents of his administration’s commitment to building on these successes. He emphasised plans to enhance infrastructure further, improve healthcare access, reform public transportation, expand youth empowerment initiatives, and develop tourism in the FCT.
In conclusion, Wike reiterated his commitment to transforming Abuja into one of the best capital territories globally. “Together, let us embrace 2025 with hope and determination,” he urged, praying for peace and prosperity in both the FCT and Nigeria.
