The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has attributed the present poor power supply in several parts of the nation to a decreased level of gas supply to generation companies.
The attendant result of the situation, he said, is a lower level of energy supplied to load centres, thereby affecting the supply of electricity to distribution companies.
To reverse the situation, Adelabu, in a statement by his media aide, Mr Bolaji Tunji, said the federal government would soon settle outstanding payments so that more gas could be supplied to generation companies.
There were indications on Friday that the debts could be settled in the coming weeks to guarantee an improved gas supply.
According to Adelabu, improved gas supply would translate to increased power generation, which distribution companies can access, thereby supplying more electricity nationwide.
Adelabu said, “In the past couple of weeks, there has been a significant downturn in the level of power supply to Nigerians.
“This is mainly due to a decreased level of gas supply to generation companies.
“This situation has led to a lower level of energy supplied to load centres, which has affected the supply of electricity to distribution companies.
“Efforts are on the way by the Federal Government to ensure outstanding payments are made to generation companies to ensure improved gas supply and increased power generation; this will also enable distribution companies to supply more electricity to Nigerians.”
