The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated that it is illegal to use tint on vehicles in the country, emphasizing that there is a law backing the prohibition.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated this on Saturday while responding to a post by an X user.
According to Adejobi, the NPF only suspended the enforcement of the ban on tint because the issuance of the permit was put on hold.
He wrote, “There is a ban on it. It’s even a legal matter because there is a law on it. The police only suspended the enforcement of the law because we had suspended the issuance of the tint permit.
“The police may be discretional about it, to ascertain whether the vehicle is being used for criminal activities or not. The use of tint on vehicles in Nigeria is an offence, and many have abused it.”
Adejobi’s remark on the tint matter is, however, confusing, as the NPF had in February 2024 lifted the ban.
Arogidigba Global Journal reports that the ban was previously initiated due to widespread concerns regarding the role of tinted glass in aiding criminal activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, the illegal transportation of firearms, and human trafficking.
However, Adejobi, in a statement on February 22, 2024, announced that the ban had been lifted.
