The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has charged President Joe Biden to immediately resign.

Johnson said if Biden is not fit to contest the upcoming presidential election, then he should not continue as president.

He made the call in a statement on Sunday, following Biden’s announcement.

“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as president. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough,” Johnson said.

On Sunday, Biden announced his decision to pull out of the forthcoming presidential election amid intense pressure over his age and health.

The president, however, vowed to focus on his duties as president.

On Friday, five House Democrats had charged the president to drop out of the 2024 election.

The lawmakers are Reps. Jared Huffman (California), Marc Veasey (Texas), Chuy Garcia (Illinois) and Marc Pocan (Wisconsin).

In a joint statement, they urged Biden to “pass the torch to a new generation of Democratic leaders.”
