Starting from November 24, 2024, any Yaka! power meters that haven’t been upgraded will stop working. According to UMEME, these meters will no longer accept new Yaka! tokens. To avoid this inconvenience, you your yaka meter will have to undergo the key-change upgrade, before the Token Identifier (TID) Rollover on 24 November 2024.

How to check if my meter is upgraded
There are various meter brands and model that UMEME supports. They include Conlog, then the newer Hexing and Chint and Inhemeter meters.
- For a Conlog meter: Press #005#, r1:t2 means not upgraded, r2:t2 or r2:t10 means upgraded.
- For Hexing and Chint meters: Press 873 and press “Enter.” 01 means not upgraded, 02 means upgraded.
- For Inhemeter meter: Press 873 and press “Enter.” If the meter displays 01-02, it means it’s not upgraded, and 02-02 means the meter is already upgraded.
The Yaka meter upgrade process raises several practical concerns, but most are straightforward. All newly installed meters will already come upgraded, and any credit on your meter will remain unaffected after the upgrade.
Now if power goes out mid-upgrade, simply wait for restoration to continue the process. Meters in someone else’s name can still be upgraded successfully, though name changes require visiting a service center. For customers unavailable before the deadline, Umeme teams will upgrade meters directly from the poles.
Also note that manual upgrades are preferred to minimize risks of communication failures according to UMEME, and upgrade tokens do not expire, though timely use is advised to prevent misplacement or token rejection. This ensures a smooth and effective transition for all customers.
