The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation, Action Health Incorporated have organised a 5-day workshop on comprehensive sexuality education for adolescents in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
The event which is sponsored by UNFPA is organised for 50 in- and out-of-school adolescent girls.
Speaking with Nigerian Tribune, the Programme Officer, Action Health Incorporated, Fatimah Idris explained that the programme is aimed at equipping the girls with knowledge about their sexual reproductive health and rights.
She said “This workshop is organised by Action Health Incorporated and proudly sponsored by The United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA for in and out -of -school adolescent girls.
“It is aimed at equipping adolescent girls with the skills and knowledge and skills they need to make decisions on their sexual reproductive health and rights and for them to know more about their sexual reproductive health and rights.
“The girls were trained on puberty, menstrual hygiene management, how to improve their self-esteem, among others in order to achieve a better future for themselves “
She however advised parents on exposure of their children to sexuality education which according to her will help prevent them from bad peer influence, and unwanted pregnancy and as well make them less vulnerable to abuse.
In an interview with one of the participants, a Senior Secondary School 2 student of Itesiwaju Community High School, Mary Adedapo stated that she has learnt a lot from the 5 – day training, according to her she has learnt more about sex education, how to calculate her menstrual cycle, improve her self-esteem and life skills on communication, assertiveness, and refusal skills.
