The rich cultural heritage of the people of Enugu-Ezike, Igbo-Eze North LGA, Enugu State, is set to be unveiled to the world as the people gear up for the 2025 Ezikeoba Cultural Carnival and Charity Event.
The ceremony, powered by Umu Enugu EzikeOba in Diaspora and Igbo Eze United Forum for Development, now in its second edition, will serve to cement the return of peace and tranquillity in the area, which was shattered two years ago when some restive youths resorted to armed struggle and violence.
Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee of the event, Dr Igwebuike Olijo, who spoke from his base in Canada, recalled that the inaugural celebration took place in 2022, marking the first of its kind in the Enugu North/Nsukka senatorial zone.
“Our rich cultural heritage was beamed to a global audience for the first time through the print and electronic media, and today, many communities in the senatorial zone have adopted the concept. Research scholars have shown renewed interest in our socio-cultural identity through positive publications, and the empowerment derivatives of the programme have added vigour to our robust community economy,” he said.
Dr Olijo noted that the new year carnival of Enugu Ezikeoba will be taken a notch higher this time, with various traditional masquerades, dance groups, and cultural events peculiar to the people of Enugu Ezike on display.
He said that a panel of judges has been selected to choose the winning groups, who will go home with mouth-watering prizes.
Dr Olijo appreciated Chief Roland Ayogu, Chairman of Umu Enugu Ezike in Diaspora, and Chief Festus Oshaba-Onuh, Chairman of Ferotex Group, who galvanised other patriotic sons of Ezikeoba, both at home and in the Diaspora, to make the carnival happen and to deepen the brotherly love, peace, unity, and progress now prevailing in the area.
“The Ezike Cultural Carnival is more than just a festival; it’s a symbol of our resilience, strength, and commitment to preserving our traditions. We are proud to showcase the beauty and diversity of our culture through music, dance, art, and tradition.
“Over the years, our people have been known for their warmth, industry, hospitality, and love for celebration. This carnival is a testament to those values, as we bring together the 36 villages of Igbo Eze North Local Government Area in a display of unity, creativity, and joy,” he stated.
