The United Kingdom has banned health and care workers from bringing dependants to the country.
This was made known by the UK Home Office via its verified X handle (formerly Twitter) on Monday.
“From today, care workers entering the UK on Health and Care Worker visas can no longer bring dependants.
“This is part of our plan to deliver the biggest ever cut in migration,” it wrote.
The UK Home Office announced that care workers and senior care workers under the Health and Care Visa will not be able to bring dependents as part of their visa application. The ban applies to health and care workers from Nigeria and other foreign countries.
The Home Office said the new plan is to reduce migration levels and curb abuse of the immigration system. Some providers have been “blindsided” by the measure and have “grave concerns” that the change could drive people from the sector.
