Except stakeholders act fast, two Delta communities may go to war over the death of a man, identified as Omoboy.
He was killed following a heated altercation at Ekakpamre community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident has sparked fear of violent retaliation from the neighbouring community of Usiefurun.
Fear of an all-out clash between the two communities has grown as both locals brace for potential violence.
The conflict began when Omoboy, a native of Usiefurun, allegedly stared at an unidentified Ekakpamre resident.
An eyewitness said a verbal argument turned violent, resulting in Omoboy being struck on the head with a power bank.
“Omoboy collapsed immediately and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
“As news of Omoboy’s death spread, tensions rose between Usiefurun and Ekakpamre. Outraged youths from Usiefurun mobilised, threatening to attack Ekakpamre in retaliation,” she stated.
To prevent a full-blown crisis, community leaders from both sides intervened.
Edafe Kporharo, President General of Ekakpamre community, confirmed the situation and reported that local authorities, especially leaders, are set to meet to calm the rising tensions and ensure peace is restored.
The Ughelli Area Commander and Otu-Jeremi Divisional Police Officer have been notified.
“They confirmed the suspect involved in the killing remains at large, but we are working closely with the police to bring him to justice,” Kporharo said.
However, many are afraid the violence could blow out of control despite the intervention of leaders.
