A Turkish citizen, Rumeysa Ozturk, was arrested on Wednesday by plainclothes immigration officers wearing masks.
Ozturk was detained outside Tufts University, where she is pursuing a PhD.
However, Forbes reports that her student visa has been revoked.
A video of her arrest, showing her being detained while walking down a street, has gone viral.
Ozturk is now being held in a detention centre in Louisiana.
Her case is similar to that of Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil and others targeted for deportation by the Donald Trump administration.
Just two days earlier, 21-year-old Columbia student and green card holder Yunseo Chung, who has lived in the US since she was seven, sued the Trump administration for attempting to arrest and deport her.
A Trump administration official told the Free Press that Khalil was not arrested for committing a crime.
“The allegation here is not that he was breaking the law,” the official said.
“He was mobilising support for Hamas and spreading antisemitism in a way that is contrary to the foreign policy of the US.”
Khalil participated in pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University during his time as a graduate student last year.
Ozturk, Chung, and Khalil are, in effect, being targeted for their speech and activism — activities that, in all three cases, the Trump administration has deemed to be aligned with Hamas.
