President Donald Trump will sign executive orders on Monday to undo gender and sex-based policies introduced by the Biden administration and remove diversity programs from the federal government, officials said before Trump’s swearing-in.
The actions, outlined by an incoming White House official, reflect the culture war issues that energized Trump’s campaign and which he has promised to address as president.
The first order would direct agencies to treat biological men and women as distinct sexes, stop promoting “gender ideology,” and require some agencies to recognize only “male” and “female” on forms.
For instance, the State Department will now require passport and visa applicants to correctly state their sex on official documents, according to the official. Federal prisons and migrant shelters will also be required to maintain “single-sex spaces,” the official added.
One of the order’s provisions will stop federal funds from being used for transition procedures, the official said. Additionally, it will “ensure that Americans have their right to free speech,” which the official claimed could be restricted when people are asked to use preferred pronouns.
“No longer will the federal government be promoting gender ideology,” the official stated.
A second order will eliminate what the official described as “radical and wasteful government DEI programs,” referring to diversity, equality, and inclusion.
The order will “dismantle the DEI bureaucracy, including environmental justice programs, equity-related grants, equity action plans, and equity initiatives.”
