The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Niger State Sector Command has confirmed that no fewer than 60 bodies, burnt beyond recognition, have so far been recovered from the scene of the Saturday fuel tanker accident at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna highway in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.
Providing further details of the accident, which occurred at about 10:00 am, the State Sector Commander, Kumar Tsukwan, in a statement in Minna, said the tanker with registration number KBG 103 XA, marked HMY Oil and Gas, and driven by one Mohammed Madu, was conveying 60,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) when the accident happened.
He explained that the body of the tanker detached from the head, causing the tanker to fall and spill its contents on the ground. He added, “A large crowd gathered to scoop the fuel despite concerted efforts to stop them. Suddenly, the tanker burst into flames.”
He disclosed that so far, no fewer than 60 bodies have been recovered from the scene of the accident, and several others who sustained varying degrees of burns have been evacuated to the hospital.
