The Lagos State Government has released a travel advisory ahead of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon 2024 to be held within the Lagos Metropolis on Saturday, February 10, 2024.
According to a statement released by The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), some parts of Lagos will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic for the safety of thousands of runners who will be participating during the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
The Marathon will start at 5.30am and the race will be in two categories with different “Start Points” and distances to be covered.
According to LASTMA, there will be a total closure of the Third Mainland Bridge inwards Lagos Island.
“As a result of the annual Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, which comes up on 10th February 2024, from 5.30am, ” a statement from LASTMA reads.
“The following routes will be temporarily closed to traffic: Funsho Williams Avenue from stadium, Ikorodu road>>>>Anthony >>>>Gbagada>>>Third Mainland Bridge>>>Dolphin rd>>>Alfred Rewane>>>Falomo Roundabout>>> Bourdilon Rd>>>Lekki bridge>>> Freedom way>>>Akin-Adesola>>>Ahmadu Bello Way.”
Meanwhile, LASTMA provided alternative routes for traffic diversion to ensure vehicular movements for motorists heading to Lagos Island, Yaba, Surulere and Victoria Island.
“However, the following alternative routes will be available for diversion: Apongbon Bridge>>>Eko Bridge>>> Costain Roundabout>>>Iponri>>>Bode Thomas or Eko Bridge>>> Costain Roundabout>>>Apapa Roadd>>>Oyingbo>>> jebba>>>Herbert Macaulay. Victoria Island>>>Independence Bridge>>>CMS bridge>>>Apongbon>>> Ijora Olopa>>>Iddo>>>Oyingbo>>>Herbert Macaulay.”
All outbound journeys from Ikorodu Road, Funsho Williams Avenue en route to Lagos Island are exempted from the closure.
Officials of LASTMA have been deployed to all the diversion points for a seamless flow of traffic while the security of the athletes is assured.
According to the organisers, over 81 Gold Label athletes have confirmed their participation in the 9th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
Bukola Olopade, Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the owners of the Lagos City Marathon, added that the United Nations has also confirmed the participation of 15 refugee runners that will be participating in the Lagos City Marathon.
