President Bola Tinubu, Labour Party’s standard bearer in 2023 general election, Peter Obi; National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Umar Ganduje; Governors Alex Otti (Abia); Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi) and Peter Mbah (Enugu), were among eminent Nigerians that attended the burial of former Abia Governor and former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
Other personalities at the burial, included Anambra Governor, Charles Soludo who was represented by his deputy, just as Imo governor, Hope Uzodimma was also represented by his deputy.
Onu who died at 72 was buried in his Uburu residence in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Represented by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, the president said Onu was a perfect gentleman who lived selfless life and contributed to the development of the country.
He noted that the late former National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) would be remembered for the great sacrifice he made for the unity and progress of the nation. Tinubu recalled that Onu played a significant role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and prayed God to bless his soul. He said that the present administration was determined to improve the living standard of the masses, which he said Onu believed in and strived to achieve. Saying that Onu will be greatly missed in the country President Tinubu noted that the deceased’s contributions to the development and growth of Abia State and Nigeria in general was what every leader must emulate.
In his address, Governor Nwifuru stated that Onu during his lifetime touched humanity and played key roles in the building, development and stability of Ebonyi State and Nigeria.
According to Nwifuru, Onu united communities in the present Ebonyi State as the Governor of Abia State and commended the Abia Governor, Alex Otti for renaming the State Polytechnic after Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
“Today, as we reflect on his achievements, we see that his dream is still alive and growing. As a Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Onu took that same spirit to the national level, advocating for our region and pushing forward policies that uplifted communities across the country.
“He was instrumental in fostering relationships that brought development and innovation to our people. He wore the mantle of leadership with dignity, advocating tirelessly for our rights, and standing as a pillar of support for those in need.
“Within our party, the All Progressives Congress, he was a chieftain who guided us with wisdom and grace. His values, his words, and his humility reminded us all of the principles that unite us.”
Peter Obi, in a chat with newsmen, expressed concern over the lack of justice in the country and described Onu as a man of integrity, justice and fairness.
He noted that the country needed people who will always fight for justice and fairness for all like Onu
