President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded a request to the Senate for the confirmation of five nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read in plenary on Tuesday, Tinubu cited Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the basis for the nominations.
The nominees are Umar Yusuf Garba from Kano State, Tai Saad Umar from Bauchi State, Chukwuemeka Ibe Siakor from Anambra State, Omar Mokhtar from Borno State—who has been reappointed for a second term—and Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinike from Bayelsa State.
The President clarified that the letter supersedes an earlier communication dated March 12, 2025, following his decision to reappoint Omar Mokhtar for another term.
“I trust that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominees in its usual expeditious manner,” Tinubu stated in the letter.
The Senate is expected to review the nominations in line with its constitutional responsibility. The letter was referred to the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters for further legislative action.
