President Bola Tinubu congratulated Alhassan Yahaya on his election as the President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) during the Union’s 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference, which took place in Owerri on November 27, 2024.
He also commended the newly elected executive members and praise for the Union’s ability to conduct a smooth and rancor-free electoral process.
According to a statement released by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu emphasised that Yahaya’s decisive victory is a clear indication of the confidence NUJ members have in his leadership qualities and vision for the organization.
“The overwhelming support for Yahaya reflects the trust that journalists across Nigeria have placed in him to lead the Fourth Estate of the Realm,” he noted.
The President expressed optimism that Yahaya’s extensive experience, particularly his previous role as deputy president of the NUJ, will serve him well as he navigates the challenges ahead. He underscored the importance of the press in fulfilling its constitutional roles with renewed passion, aligning their efforts with the foundational ideals of journalism in Nigeria.
“Journalism plays a critical role in our democracy and society at large,” Tinubu stated. “I encourage you to embrace your responsibilities with a sense of patriotism and integrity.”
Moreover, President Tinubu urged Yahaya and his new executive team to address various malpractices within the journalism industry.
He highlighted that ethical journalism is essential for maintaining public trust and credibility. The President called upon the NUJ leadership to foster an environment where journalistic standards are upheld rigorously.
Reiterating his administration’s dedication to supporting a free and independent media, Tinubu stressed that such an environment is vital for deepening democracy and promoting national development. “A vibrant media landscape is crucial for informing citizens and holding power accountable,” he remarked.
He expressed hope that Yahaya’s tenure would reflect a strengthened commitment to ethical journalism while also fostering a collaborative relationship between journalists and government officials. This partnership, he believes, will contribute to building a just and equitable society.
President Tinubu wished Yahaya and his team a successful and impactful term in office. He expressed confidence that under Yahaya’s leadership, the NUJ would continue to play a pivotal role in shaping public discourse and advancing democratic values in Nigeria.
