Suspected terrorists affiliated with Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin, JNIM, have launched a coordinated and deadly assault on a town in southern Burkina Faso.
The attack occurred on January 23, 2025.
Zagazola Makama, a Lake Chad Basin counter terrorism and insurgency expert, who made this known in a post on his X account on Sunday.
Makama stated that witness accounts and emerging images from the scene revealed the group’s use of overwhelming numbers, coordinated tactics, and heavy fire support to overrun local defenses.
“The assault, described as a “submersion attack,” involved dozens of fighters who overwhelmed security positions with sustained fire from mounted heavy machine guns, including a double-barreled 14.5mm weapon a hallmark of their recent escalations,” he said.
