The Sokoto State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Faruk Wurno, has strongly condemned the use of harmful traditional practices in treating metal poisoning, particularly the dangerous methods employed by local barbers.
Dr. Wurno criticized the practice of making incisions on patients’ stomachs as a treatment for metal poisoning, calling for an immediate end to such procedures. He emphasized the importance of seeking professional medical care instead of resorting to unsafe traditional methods.
Speaking at the General Hospital Tureta during the presentation of government-supplied drugs for metal poisoning treatment, Dr. Wurno urged the public to prioritize hospital treatment for affected individuals.
“The harmful practice of making incisions on patients suffering from metal poisoning must stop immediately. Those experiencing symptoms should be taken to hospitals for proper medical care,” he stated.
Represented by the Executive Director of the State Hospital Services Management Board, Dr. Bello Abubakar Attahiru, Dr. Wurno reassured the public that the government would distribute essential medications to all general hospitals handling metal poisoning cases.
Receiving the medical supplies, the Chairman of Tureta Local Government Council, Aliyu Abubakar Tureta, expressed his gratitude for the timely intervention.
He pledged that the local government would ensure the proper use of the medications and highlighted previous efforts taken to address the health crisis.
The state government’s intervention aims to curb unsafe traditional treatment methods and enhance access to safer, more effective medical care for affected patients.
