Governor Aliyu Ahmed of Sokoto State has expressed sorrow over the devastating fire that razed the Sokoto Timber Market, also known as Kasuwar Yan Katako, earlier today, Thursday.
The incident destroyed over 500 stalls, leaving at least 4,000 traders grappling with significant losses.

In a statement posted on his official X handle, the governor extended his sympathies to the victims.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Sokoto State, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by this disaster. Please know that we stand with you during this difficult time, and we are committed to supporting you as we work towards recovery and rebuilding,” he wrote.

Governor Ahmed disclosed that he had directed emergency services to the scene immediately after receiving news of the fire to contain the blaze and minimize the damage.

Additionally, he instructed relevant agencies to assess the extent of the losses and provide immediate relief to the affected traders.

He further announced the establishment of a task force to investigate the cause of the fire and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.

“We will work tirelessly to ensure that the affected traders are supported, and the market is restored to full functionality as quickly as possible,” he stated.

Governor Ahmed reassured residents of his administration’s commitment to their safety and prosperity.

“Our administration remains committed to the safety, security, and prosperity of all residents of Sokoto State. We will continue to prioritize preventive measures and infrastructure development to safeguard our markets and communities,” he added.

“May Allah (SWT) grant strength to all those affected and protect our state from future calamities,” he said.
